Title: The Feelings Book: The Care & Keeping of your Emotions
Author: Dr. Lynda Madison and Josee Masse
My Take on this Title:
Boy, I could have used this book when I was a young girl. It would have helped when my grandfather became sick and passed away or when friends didn’t treat me right or when I had feelings that I just didn’t understand and was too afraid to share with others.
Not only does this book explain where feelings come from and how they affect our mind and body, but they give a girl tools, like questionnaires or strategies, to use when figuring out what she is feeling and what do those feelings mean. I especially appreciated the section called “Why Do You Cry?” and the suggestion that crying shouldn’t replace talking about your feelings or taking actions that might help.
Lastly, this book adeptly addresses some feelings that could be scary like “I’m so jealous”, “I feel out of control”, “I’m so lonely”. It even gives you scripts of what to practice saying when you lose your cool and need to apologize and tips for staying positive when you’re feeling down.
This book could save young girls (ages 8-12) from a lot of confusion and angst, as well as kick start some crucial conversations that might otherwise not happen.
