Title: Maisy Goes to the Hospital
Author: Lucy Cousins
My Take on this Title:
For younger children (2-6 years) and recommended by Children’s Department Librarian at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.
You’ve got to love Maisy and her “First Experiences” books. There’s nothing quite like a mouse with crutches and a duck named Daisy to make things less scary. Doctor Duck was there to help Maisy with her hurt leg and the child gets to explore what it feels like to be away from home and friends. But, you also see how kids can make friends who are also in the hospital for various reasons. And, the best part, when people visit and bring flowers or cookies or toys.
As a child, I went to the hospital just overnight because of a kidney infection. I still remember the little girl who was in the room with me. Her name was Becky. These kinds of books are so helpful in dispelling fears and giving children something to look forward to even when they need to go to the hospital. Nurse Comfort is a flamingo, by the way. That alone is worth buying this book!
